What is a Crown (Cap)?

A crown, otherwise known as a cap, is custom designed to be placed over a damaged tooth.  It is made to look, feel and bite like a natural tooth.  They are usually made with all porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, gold.  Occasionally they are made of gold.  A crown is cemented or bonded into place.

Why Do I Need a Crown?

There are several reasons why a tooth needs a crown.

​

  • Large fillings

  • Teeth with discoloration, cracks or other damage

  • Restoring implants

  • Root canal treated teeth

  • Poorly shaped or misaligned teeth

What is a Bridge?

A bridge helps to replace missing teeth by attaching to teeth on both sides of the space, therefore "bridging" the space.  The replacement will look and feel natural.  They are usually made with all porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and occasionally gold.  A bridge is cemented or bonded into place.

Why Do I Need a Bridge?

There are several reasons why a bridge is needed.

​

  • Fill space left by a missing tooth

  • Prevent shifting of remaining teeth

  • Permanent alternative to a removable partial denture.

  • Fixed meaning not removable, like a partial.
